PKR Vice-President and Natural Resources Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has said he welcomes any contest for the leadership of the party’s Setiawangsa division, including from high-profile challenger Datuk Afdlin Shauki.
Speaking at a press conference after officiating the launch of Agrobank’s first Green Branch in Bagan Serai today, Nik Nazmi said he respects the democratic process and views competition within the party as a positive sign of engagement.
“I’m open to being challenged – because we celebrate democracy, and we welcome any member who wishes to contest,” he said when asked to comment on reports that Afdlin, a well-known actor, comedian, and film director, would be contesting the post of PKR Setiawangsa Division Chief in the party’s upcoming internal elections.
While expressing openness to competition, Nik Nazmi stressed that any contest must be conducted respectfully and that he does not underestimate any of his opponents.
“All candidates stand a chance to win. I believe the PKR members of Setiawangsa are with me,” he added confidently.
Nik Nazmi, who currently serves as both PKR Vice-President and the Setiawangsa division chief, has confirmed his intention to defend both positions in the party’s leadership elections, scheduled for 24 May 2025.
His challenger, Afdlin Shauki, is not new to politics, having previously been active in social justice causes and making his political affiliations known in recent years. His candidacy introduces a celebrity dynamic into the local division race, potentially drawing wider public attention.
Still, Nik Nazmi remains unshaken, insisting that the spirit of party democracy must remain at the forefront.
“What matters most is that we maintain a healthy and respectful democratic process. Internal contests should strengthen the party, not divide it,” he said.
As the race for party leadership heats up, the Setiawangsa division is likely to be closely watched – not only for its strategic urban constituency but now also for the high-profile nature of the contenders. - April 10, 2025
