Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni has announced today that a grand total of nine cases of monkeypox (mpox) have been identified in Malaysia, covering three states, and Kuala Lumpur has the highest incidence with six cases.

"From July 2023 to the present date, nine cases of monkeypox have been reported in Malaysia. The initial two cases were documented in Kuala Lumpur in July, followed by the third and fourth cases in October, and five additional cases in November. The fifth case was detected in Sarawak, while the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth cases occurred in Kuala Lumpur," he announced during the Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat.

Lukanisman specified that out of the nine cases, one involved a foreigner, while the rest were Malaysians. This revelation came in response to Jerai MP Sabri Azit's inquiry about preventive measures to curb the potential spread of monkeypox, akin to the control measures implemented for the COVID-19 virus.

Monkeypox is transmitted through close contact with individuals displaying symptoms and signs of the infection. The Health Ministry (MoH) has instituted various preventive measures to impede the transmission of monkeypox in the country. These measures include intensive monitoring at all international entry points in collaboration with the Malaysian immigration department to promptly identify cases of monkeypox entering the country.

In the case of higher education students arriving in Malaysia from countries with reported monkeypox cases or endemic areas, they are mandated to self-monitor symptoms for 21 days. If any symptoms emerge, they are required to seek immediate treatment at a nearby health facility. Travelers arriving at international borders displaying obvious signs of a rash on the face or hands will be immediately referred to healthcare officers for further examination. Suspected cases of monkeypox will be promptly directed to hospitals for further treatment.

Monkeypox symptoms include fever accompanied by a maculopapular rash on the face, palms, soles, genitalia, conjunctiva, and cornea. The Ministry of Health is actively implementing these measures to control and prevent the spread of monkeypox, ensuring the health and safety of the Malaysian population.

Monkeypox (Mpox) is a viral illness resulting from the monkeypox virus, belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus. There are two distinct clades: clade I and clade II.

Common symptoms of Mpox include a skin rash or mucosal lesions lasting 2–4 weeks, accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

Transmission to humans can occur through physical contact with an infected person, exposure to contaminated materials, or contact with infected animals.

Laboratory confirmation of Mpox involves PCR testing of material from skin lesions.

Supportive care is the primary approach to Mpox treatment. In some cases, vaccines and therapeutics developed for smallpox, approved for use in certain countries, can be employed for Mpox.

A global outbreak of Mpox occurred in 2022–2023, attributed to a strain known as clade IIb.

Prevention of Mpox involves avoiding physical contact with infected individuals. Vaccination is also recommended for those at risk to help prevent infection.
