Kota Kinabalu: Nine policemen were acquitted of multiple charges of accepting bribes totalling RM14,040 after the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against them.
Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga discharged and acquitted the nine, aged between 36 and 49, without calling for their defence.
The charges alleged that they received money from Anizan Misdaranai, 39, as inducement not to take action against him over a drug offence between 2014 and 2018.
Jason ruled, after a maximum evaluation of the totality of the evidence, that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
The prosecution called 24 witnesses during the trial, with MACC Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Izzati Sapifee prosecuting while lawyers Azhier Farhan Arisin, Batholomew Jingulam and Sylyester Kuan represented the nine.
