A teacher from a tahfiz school pleaded not guilty today at the Sessions Court to charges of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old boy. Muhammad Ilyas Jamaludin, 33, faces allegations of committing the offense at a religious school located in Tasik Senangin, Lenggeng, over the course of last year. The case has sparked concern among the local community, raising awareness about child safety in educational institutions.
The charges fall under Section 14(b) of the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, which carries severe penalties including up to 20 years of imprisonment and whipping if convicted. Judge Datin Surita Budin, presiding over the case, set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and emphasized that the accused must not intimidate any witnesses involved in the case. The ruling aims to ensure the safety and well-being of the victim while legal proceedings take place.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Balkis Zunaidi is leading the prosecution team, while Muhammad Ilyas is represented by defense lawyer Mohd Zaharudeen Harun. According to the defense, Ilyas is now employed at a madrasah in Kuala Lumpur, where he earns a modest monthly income of RM1,600. His current employment and financial situation were presented as part of his bail request. However, the prosecution maintains that the gravity of the allegations requires careful judicial oversight to ensure justice is served.
In a separate but related case, an Indonesian teenager has also been charged with abusing a child at the same school and during the same period. The teenager, who worked as an assistant at the madrasah, was entrusted with the care of the nine-year-old Indonesian boy. The abuse charges have been filed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which stipulates a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison, a fine of RM50,000, or both, depending on the court's ruling. Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi, overseeing this particular case, set bail for the accused at RM7,000.
The Indonesian teenager's case has also garnered significant attention due to the vulnerability of the victim and the nature of the charges. Deputy Public Prosecutors Intan Noorashikin Nasarudin and Nor Baizura Mohd Saubian are handling the prosecution, while Fadlyzil Ikram Norzailan Shah is defending the accused. The defense argued for leniency based on the teenager’s role and background, but the prosecution remains firm in seeking justice for the victim.
Both cases are scheduled for mention on November 29, as the courts continue to gather evidence and hear testimonies. These proceedings are part of a larger societal issue, shining a light on the importance of safeguarding children in educational settings. The community is closely watching the developments, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The legal outcomes of these cases could set a precedent for future child abuse and sexual assault cases in Malaysia, highlighting the importance of holding individuals accountable, especially those in positions of authority.
