In a recent move to quell internal party tension, Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi delivered a stern reminder to Umno leaders to avoid creating unnecessary conflict with component parties within the unity government. His message comes in response to recent remarks by Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who publicly suggested that Pakatan Harapan (PH) should apologise for its past political attacks on Umno.
Zahid, who also serves as Umno President, was quick to clarify that Nur Jazlan's comments were made in a personal capacity, not as the official stance of the party. 'Pakatan Harapan doesn’t need to apologise. Let’s not disrupt the component parties in the unity government. Mutual respect is essential,' Zahid told reporters recently after attending the closing ceremony of the Rakan Nadma (National Disaster Management Agency) convention, themed 'Malaysia Madani, Siaga Bencana'.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that maintaining the integrity and stability of the unity government should be the primary concern of all leaders. He said the important aspect is to maintain the current state of the government and avoid creating problems.
Zahid’s comments were directed towards party members, including Nur Jazlan and Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh, both of whom had voiced opinions seen as critical towards PH. According to Zahid, these statements should be viewed as personal opinions unless officially sanctioned by Umno leadership.
In an effort to reinforce unity, Zahid highlighted that he had met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and other leaders from the unity government following the Cabinet meeting. The discussions, he noted, were focused on strengthening cooperation among the coalition members, setting aside political differences to effectively tackle challenges such as by-elections and the looming general election.
This unity, Zahid stressed, is pivotal as the coalition navigates a complex political landscape, particularly after the recent victories of Umno and Barisan Nasional in the Sungai Bakap, Nenggiri, and Mahkota by-elections. His message was clear: the coalition cannot afford internal discord.
Zahid’s call for restraint underscores the delicate balance that exists within Malaysia’s multi-party unity government. With several parties working together, avoiding friction is key to maintaining the stability and functionality of the administration.
As Umno continues to navigate its place within the broader political landscape, Zahid’s reminder to focus on collaboration rather than confrontation serves as a timely warning to party members. In a period where political unity is paramount, internal disputes could prove detrimental not just to Umno but to the entire coalition.
In his closing ceremony speech, Zahid's message reinforces the need for mutual respect and a united front as the government faces future challenges. "We need to place our differing views aside to seek common ground. We must move forward to foster good cooperation in facing any potential challenges, including by-elections or general elections," he concluded.
This pragmatic approach highlights Zahid’s focus on long-term stability over short-term political gains, urging Umno leaders to prioritize the collective good of the unity government.
