When public holidays in Malaysia land on a weekend, it is often carried forward to the nearest weekday (Monday) as a replacement day off.
But what happens when 2 public holidays land on the same weekday?
According to the Cabinet, Constitution and Intergovernmental Relations Division of the Prime Minister’s Department, there will be no automatically granted replacement public holiday for the overlap of Malaysia Day and the birthday of Prophet Muhammad SAW (Maulidur Rasul).
Malaysia Day and Maulidur Rasul will both land on September 16 (Monday) this year, and while Google Calendar has stated September 17 (Tuesday) as a replacement for Malaysia Day, the government’s announcement says otherwise.
This is due to the Holiday Act 1951 [Act 369], which does not provide for an automatic replacement holiday for public holidays that overlap or fall on the same working day.
However, the government can designate another day to be accepted as a public holiday, if it is deemed necessary.
