Let's be real, life as a university student in Malaysia without a car can be a brutal endurance test. Walking under the blazing afternoon sun just to get from your hostel to a lecture hall is exhausting, and waiting for campus buses can eat up half your day.
But if you think buying a car is your only escape, Perodua is about to completely change your mind.
The local automotive giant is officially shifting gears from traditional car sales to a "Mobility as a Lifestyle" concept. They’ve just introduced a brand-new, app-based car-rental service called UCar-e (pronounced You Car), and it is designed specifically for university students and campus staff to zip around campus hassle-free.
Here is everything you need to know about this new student lifesaver launching this month (June 2026):
1. Ditch the hot walks, just book it from your phone

The entire concept of UCar-e is built to make campus transit completely seamless. You won't have to deal with complicated paperwork or long rental counters.
Instead, the app lets you instantly locate available Perodua vehicles parked at designated spots right inside your university grounds. Once you're done driving from your residential college to your exam or lecture hall, you simply park the car at a designated return zone on campus and walk away. Perodua has already committed an initial fleet of 50 vehicles to kickstart the project.
2. Only 3 lucky universities get to try it firstPerodua is rolling out the service in stages depending on university readiness, and three local institutions have been chosen to spearhead the pioneer phase:
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM)Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM-MJIIT)The official launch recently took place at Inasis Perodua in UUM, meaning students at these select campuses will be the very first to test out the car-sharing lifestyle.
This isn't just a car rental service; it's also a legitimate part-time job opportunity. Perodua is working directly with the universities to hire students to look after the cars.
If you get appointed as a vehicle management agent, your job will involve:
Monitoring fuel levels so the cars don't run dry.Maintaining overall cleanliness inside and out.Ensuring the general upkeep and proper maintenance of the fleet. In return, Perodua is paying these student agents commission-based earnings, giving you a solid side hustle and real-world entrepreneurship exposure right on your resume.
Perodua’s big move into car-sharing comes down to one major factor: Gen Z psychology. The brand openly admits that younger Malaysians are losing interest in traditional vehicle ownership. Between crippling maintenance fees, limited campus parking lots, and brutal daily traffic congestion, Gen Z is actively choosing to pay for the experience of driving when they need it, rather than taking on the heavy financial burden of a car loan.
