Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman has shared how being an independent Member of Parliament (MP) has afforded him peace of mind and allowed him to hold firm to his principles. The former president of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) emphasized the importance of staying true to his values, even if it means standing alone in the Dewan Rakyat.

Speaking to Utusan Malaysia, Syed Saddiq underscored his dedication to representing the people as a “third force” in Parliament, separate from the influence of coalitions such as Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Perikatan Nasional (PN). He stated, “Though I stand alone, I can sleep peacefully at night. For me, this is far more valuable than compromising my principles or dignity when meeting voters.”

The young MP highlighted his mission of championing the voices of the people through checks and balances and meaningful policy proposals. “My duty is to ensure that the rakyat’s concerns are defended. I will continue advocating for reforms and offering policy ideas until the next general election, working toward a brighter future for the country,” he added.

Syed Saddiq made it clear that despite his independence, he is firmly positioned within the Opposition bloc. However, his role is distinct from traditional opposition MPs as he avoids aligning himself with any particular coalition, maintaining his freedom to critique and support initiatives based on merit rather than partisan considerations.

On Public Perception and Legal Challenges

Addressing speculation about his reduced public visibility following his criminal conviction, Syed Saddiq clarified that this change is due to his decision to step down as MUDA president rather than an intentional retreat. The MP is currently appealing his conviction on charges of criminal breach of trust and other related allegations.

Despite these legal challenges, Syed Saddiq remains focused on his role as an independent lawmaker. His decision to leave the party leadership was seen as a move to prioritize his parliamentary responsibilities and uphold MUDA’s vision of being a non-partisan force in Malaysian politics.

On Personal Life

The interview also veered into personal territory when questions arose about Syed Saddiq’s marital status and plans. At 32, the former MUDA president remains single, and he was firm in maintaining that these matters are private. “This is a question I will not answer. Marriage is something that will happen in God’s time,” he remarked.

When asked about whether he is currently in a relationship, Syed Saddiq offered a similarly brief response: “This is a personal matter.”

Through his independence in Parliament, Syed Saddiq exemplifies a commitment to principle over partisanship. While his journey as a politician comes with its challenges, his determination to prioritize integrity and accountability resonates with those seeking genuine representation in Malaysian politics.
