No damage reported to Petronas gas facilities following minor earthquake in Segamat

NO damage has been reported thus far to Petronas Gas Bhd (PGB) infrastructure or underground pipeline facilities following a minor earthquake that struck the Segamat district on Wednesday morning, Johor state officials have confirmed.

Johor’s Executive Councillor for Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh (pic), said a full report is still awaited from Petronas to ensure all safety measures are in place and that infrastructure remains structurally sound.

“We understand there is concern among residents regarding the underground gas pipeline facilities. However, so far, we have not received any report from Petronas regarding damage to their infrastructure, whether due to soil movement or otherwise,” he said.

“We are still waiting for a complete report from all relevant agencies, including the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), to determine if any improvement measures are required,” he added during a press conference after the launch of Johor’s Road Repair Innovation Initiative at Persiaran Laksamana on Thursday.

Mohamad Fazli noted that initial inspections of state-owned assets such as roads, bridges, Public Works Department (JKR) buildings, Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) structures, and dams in the affected areas revealed no significant damage.

“There may be some minor cracks, but these do not compromise the structural integrity,” he said.

“As for schools, hospitals, clinics and other facilities under the purview of different agencies, we are still awaiting reports from the respective departments before taking any further action,” he added. - August 28, 2025
