KOTA KINABALU: The State Government will not delay implementing revised hotel licensing fees under the Kota Kinabalu City By-Laws 1966, despite concerns from small and medium-sized hotels.
Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, told the State Assembly the move ensures consistency and streamlines fee collection by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).
He said fees remain modest—RM4.65 (Class 1), RM2.65 (Class 2), and RM1.30 (Class 3) per occupied room per day. Unoccupied rooms are not charged.
Responding to calls for deferment, Abidin argued the fees are still lower than those charged to small traders and remain among the lowest in Malaysia. He noted hotels have paid RM10 per room annually since 1989—just 0.27 sen per month.
Abidin confirmed engagement sessions were held with hotel associations and the tourism ministry. He also said Airbnb operators may soon be subject to licensing.
Citing increased tourist arrivals, especially from China, he added: “Hotels are profiting—it’s fair DBKK benefits too, to enhance city services.”
