Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Marzuki Nasir clarified that the club has yet to make a final decision on building its own stadium in the foreseeable future.

This followed his recent disclosure that the club is planning to build a RM50 million stadium in Likas which had since sent Rhino fans into a frenzy.

He said in a statement released on Tuesday that the plan of owning their own stadium is still subject to financial capability of the club and a suitable site, which will be discussed later with the Sabah Football Association (Safa) supreme committee as the club is still owned by them until the end of the year.

“I had indeed made a few comments on the proposal to build a new stadium last week that had drawn a reaction among the netizens.

“Our long-term plan is to have our own football stadium with a capacity of 15,000 to 20,000 spectators and equipped with full facilities.

“However, it will only be used for football matches and there is no need to have running tracks. It doesn’t matter how big it is, we will try to minimise the costs,” he said.

For the record, Likas Stadium managed by Sabah Sports Board has been used by the State teams for their home matches since the eighties.

Meanwhile, Sabah FC will be looking for a foreign player to replace Nigerian striker Njoku Jacob who left the club by mutual agreement last month.

Marzuki said they have a two-month cushion to search for the right player ahead of the July transfer window.

According to him, they have identified several potential candidates and they are being monitored closely by head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee and technical director

Scott Olleranshaw before making any final decision.

He also revealed that the departure of Njoku was due to problems related to his family and the early termination of his contract was mutually agreed by both parties.
