No foul play in custodial death of S’wak man: Bukit Aman

MIRI – A native man from the interior Baram district in northern Sarawak who died in police custody while being investigated in a criminal case had succumbed to natural causes, said Bukit Aman police headquarters.

The detainee aged 50 had died of bleeding in the abdomen due to chronic liver disease and there was no foul play involved, said Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad today.

“The man from Baram was detained on Monday to assist in a probe in a criminal intimidation case and while on the way to Marudi police station, he suffered breathing problems.

“He was rushed to Bakong Clinic but was pronounced dead at 10.30pm.

“A post-mortem on the deceased at the Miri hospital mortuary later showed he died of bleeding in the abdomen due to chronic liver disease,” he said in a press statement.

The case is now classified as sudden death. – The Vibes, August 4, 2023
