SHAH ALAM, Sept 3 - Firefighters faced difficulties bringing a large fire at a wood processing factory along Jalan Besar Kapar under control earlier this morning, with the absence of fire hydrants hampering water supply to the scene.
The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said the team received an emergency call at 1.04am and mobilised 24 personnel and officers, along with heavy firefighting equipment to the factory located about 8km from the Kapar Fire and Rescue Station.
Firefighting teams from six other stations: Klang Utara, Klang Selatan, Subang Jaya, Port Klang, Bukit Jelutong, and Petaling Jaya, were also deployed to assist.
Selangor JBPM assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Asbar said the first team arrived nine minutes after the call and found the 1.6-hectare premises engulfed in a Class A fire.
“The fire was estimated to have affected 80 per cent of the premises,” he said in a statement.
The lack of fire hydrants at the location made it more difficult for firefighters to bring the blaze under control.
“Efforts to bring the situation under control were delayed as there were no fire hydrants available at the location,” Ashrul said.
As of 3.40am, firefighters were still working to contain the fire completely.
Water tankers were brought in to support the operation, with crews deploying eight continuous water streams using mechanical tank pumps due to the lack of a direct water source at the site.
