KUALA LUMPUR – Preliminary findings into the bus crash that claimed 15 lives along the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak on June 9 have found no evidence of mechanical failure, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today.

He said checks conducted by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) revealed that the braking system, including all brake linings and drums across the axles, were in satisfactory condition.

“There were no irregularities in the brake drums or signs of worn-out brake linings. There is no indication of mechanical failure in these areas that could be directly linked to the cause of the crash,” Loke said in a statement.

He added that a physical inspection of the tyres found their tread depth to be within acceptable limits, complying with Road Transport Department (JPJ) safety standards. The steering and suspension components were also found to be in good working condition.

Given these findings, Loke said other contributing factors – such as human error or road conditions – are now being looked at as the likely cause.

“The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will consider and implement appropriate improvements based on the final investigation report to further enhance road safety,” he said.

Loke reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to road safety, saying enforcement will continue to be strengthened to ensure adherence to safety standards, driver qualifications, and transport company operations.

He also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and assured them that the ministry would pursue justice and work to prevent similar tragedies.

The crash involved a chartered bus carrying students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), travelling from Jertih to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, which collided with a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

Fifteen students lost their lives in the incident, while 33 others – including the bus driver, co-driver, and occupants of the MPV – sustained injuries. - June 14, 2025
