Sabah Umno has sought to clarify its political direction ahead of the next state election, making it clear that its current reserved stance on political cooperation should not be mistaken for outright refusal. The party emphasized that while collaboration remains on the table, any future alliances must be carefully considered and shaped by the lessons learned from previous missteps.

Datuk Suhaimi Nasir, who serves as Sabah Umno’s Information Chief, shared that Barisan Nasional (BN) is keeping its options open regarding partnerships with other parties. However, any potential coalition will need to prioritize the interests of the people and the stability of the state. Reflecting on the political fallout of the 16th Sabah state election (PRN16), Suhaimi pointed out that past collaborations had cost the party dearly, particularly in terms of public trust and internal cohesion.

The statement appears to address recent remarks by Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, secretary-general of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), who noted that Sabah BN had shown reluctance to work together for the upcoming state election (PRN17). Masidi indicated that GRS has yet to reach a final decision, pending discussions at its Supreme Council meeting expected soon.

Suhaimi highlighted that previous alliances lacked political sincerity and consistent leadership, factors that undermined both ideological alignment and practical cooperation. He noted that the consequences of such partnerships were not just political in nature but also deeply impacted the party’s ability to maintain credibility and unity.

In light of these experiences, Sabah Umno has adopted a more measured and strategic approach to evaluating future alliances. The goal, Suhaimi explained, is not to react hastily to short-term political pressures but to ensure that any coalition formed serves the long-term interests of Sabah’s citizens.

He further stressed that decisions about the state's future should not revolve around how many parties can come together, but rather focus on building a coalition capable of upholding integrity and delivering sustained development. Ensuring grassroots voices are heard and respected remains a top priority.

Suhaimi concluded that this shift toward caution should be viewed as a constructive recalibration rather than an act of resistance. The emphasis, he said, is on building a solid foundation that avoids the pitfalls of the past and strengthens the state's political stability moving forward.
