PETALING JAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, will be granting an audience to Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and Pakatan Harapan leader Anwar Ibrahim at 4.30pm.

In a statement, Istana Negara said no single MP had the simple majority to form the government and become prime minister.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong advises the public to be calm and patient until the new government is formed and the country’s 10th prime minister is nominated,” said Comptroller of the Royal Household, Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, in the statement.

Fadil said that Istana Negara received information about the coalition of political parties working together to form the new government after the general election on Saturday.

“After the prime ministerial candidates names were received, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, verified the candidates believed to have majority support in the Dewan Rakyat so as to appoint a new Prime Minister in line with Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution,” said the statement.

“However, it was found that no member of the Dewan Rakyat has got a simple majority to be appointed Prime Minister.”

PH won 82 seats at Saturday’s polls while PN won 73 seats, both well short of the simple majority of 112 required in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat.
