A Malaysian TikToker who goes by the name @dma_islam recently found himself under fire for criticising the Mass Communication course, calling it “a pointless and useless” program.

“Mass comm is among the stupidest courses in Malaysia,” he said in his recent viral post.

The man also specified other courses that he deemed stupid, and in his list, traditional music courses, theatre, and music are even worse.

“That’s stupid. You don’t need a degree to dance. See, I can dance, too,” he said while putting up some moves.

He also slammed those who took up the PTPTN loan just to get a degree in the said courses and told them to “get a real life” by going out to work instead. He added that most theatre students are only participating in the course to socialise and enjoy because, to him, that’s what the students do throughout the course.

“A degree is only for those who have a lot of money and want to waste their cash on the certificate.”

He previously went viral for saying he “bought” a degree certificate from his university, and the management of his alma mater said a police report was lodged against him for disseminating false news. It was also confirmed that he was no longer a student of the university.

His take on the Mass Comm degree did not sit well with Malaysians

Following the circulation of his video, many, particularly those in the industry, commented and criticised him on the matter.

Malaysian model and singer, Dewi Liana Seriestha, asked what the TikToker has contributed so far in his life.

Another user commented and said how the music course has changed her life, which was one of her best decisions.

Malaysian actor, Aaron Aziz, responded via his Instagram reel and told the TikToker to remove the name “Islam” from his social media handle and asked him to stop insulting others.

“Remove the name ‘Islam’ if you’re going to keep insulting others for their choices. The mass communication industry is the one that elevates the film industry.”

To those who graduated with a degree in Mass Comm, what’s your take on his controversial statement?
