PKR Deputy Information Chief I, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, has pushed back against allegations of nepotism following speculation that Nurul Izzah Anwar may run for the party's deputy president post. He clarified that participating in a democratic contest should not be equated with being handed a position through favoritism.
Ramanan explained that nepotism refers to appointments made without a transparent process, particularly when family ties are involved. In contrast, Nurul Izzah, as he noted, would be entering an internal party election where over 30,000 PKR members will cast their votes—making the claim of nepotism unfounded in this context.
He further argued that a person's lineage should not disqualify them from leadership. Ramanan questioned the logic behind barring individuals from political roles merely because their parents are involved in politics, calling such a view unreasonable. He emphasized that individuals must be judged on their qualifications and not family connections alone.
Describing PKR as a party that values democracy, Ramanan pointed out that Nurul Izzah’s potential candidacy is emerging from grassroots encouragement rather than any top-down directive. He encouraged members to remain open to all nominees who wish to serve the party.
While not formally declaring her candidacy, Nurul Izzah had acknowledged on Wednesday that calls from the party’s base urging her to contest were being taken seriously. She also stated that any decision on the matter would be announced in due time.
As for her capabilities, Ramanan highlighted Nurul Izzah’s track record, citing her extensive political experience, integrity, and international standing as indicators of her readiness to take on a higher leadership role.
Meanwhile, Ramanan confirmed he has no intention of vying for the deputy president’s post himself. Instead, he will be contesting for one of the vice-president positions in the upcoming party elections for the 2025–2028 term.
In recent days, speculation has increased over a possible leadership battle between Nurul Izzah and current deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. Some within the party have already voiced their support for her to challenge the incumbent, framing it as a healthy democratic contest rather than an internal conflict rooted in family ties.
