On 2 February, a 52-year-old woman was found dead in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds at a home in Alor Setar, Kedah.
As previously reported, the murder suspect, her 28-year-old son, was arrested while travelling on an express bus at Kilometre 441.5 southbound along the North-South Expressway towards Selangor.

Following the arrest, Kota Setar District Police Chief ACP Syed Basri Syed Ali revealed that the suspect was reportedly under pressure from loan sharks. He was also struggling to pay RM700 a month to rent a motorcycle for p-hailing services and had reportedly fallen behind on his room rental payments.
In the latest development, Amirul Shafiq Shamshul Zahari was brought before the Magistrate’s Court today (11 February), where he was charged with murdering his biological mother.
He now faces the death penalty.
According to Sinar Harian, no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge, Amirul Shafiq is accused of murdering Zahrullail Basir at a house in Taman Sultan Abdul Halim between 3:15 AM and 8:00 AM.
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, along with at least 12 strokes of the cane if the death sentence is not imposed.
The court has set 11 May as the next mention date while awaiting the post-mortem and forensic reports.
