KUALA LUMPUR – The allegation labelling the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as a ‘corporate mafia’ is groundless and based on unreliable information, according to MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Azam said that the accusation has no impact on him, as it was derived from unverified sources lacking credible evidence.

“If there is any evidence, go ahead and report it to the police,” Azam said.

He expressed indifference to claims made on platforms like YouTube, emphasising that if anyone has valid evidence, they should report it to the authorities.

"I don’t care about YouTube. If they have any information from unverified sources, it’s up to them. If anyone has evidence, they should report it to the authorities. It's that simple," he added.

Azam also reminded journalists of their ethical responsibility, questioning whether they would rely on information from unreliable sources. “If there’s proof, go to the authorities and file a report. It’s easy. Do whatever videos you want, but if there’s a criminal element, take it to court and the authorities. I’m okay with that.”

The allegations were raised in a Bloomberg report that suggested the anti-corruption body was involved in a network allegedly acting as a ‘corporate mafia’ in collusion with business figures to take over local companies.

In response, Azam revealed that he had issued a legal notice to Bloomberg and would pursue further legal action if the company failed to respond within 14 days.

Recently, there were calls for Azam to be relieved of his position following Bloomberg’s report, which claimed he held shares in a financial services company based on corporate filings.

However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated last Friday that there was no immediate need to suspend Azam, and instead, the matter should be referred to a special committee for further investigation.

The committee, chaired by Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, also includes Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz, Chief Director of Public Services, and Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican, Secretary-General of the Treasury. – February 15, 2026
