Loke says there is no reason to dissolve Parliament as the government continues to enjoy majority support, stressing the need for political stability
PUTRAJAYA: DAP maintains that there is no need for the Unity Government to dissolve Parliament as long as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim continues to command majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.
Its secretary-general Anthony Loke said the Unity Government was formed based on an understanding reached after the 15th General Election (GE15), with each party’s Members of Parliament receiving a five-year mandate.
“After the last general election, several parties and coalitions, following the advice of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the time, formed this Unity Government.
“As long as the understanding remains intact and there is majority support from Members of Parliament, there is no need to dissolve Parliament at this point as the current parliamentary term still has about 15 months remaining until the end of next year,” he told a press conference after officiating the Wanita DAP National Congress 2026 here today.
Also present was Wanita DAP chief Teo Nie Ching.
Loke said the remaining 15 months should be focused on implementing reforms and agendas agreed upon by coalition partners, including proposed amendments to the Federal Constitution.
These include separating the roles of the Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor, which has been approved by the Cabinet and tabled in Parliament, as well as limiting the prime minister’s tenure to two terms or 10 years.
“The two matters should be among the government’s key priorities in the upcoming parliamentary session, alongside the tabling of Budget 2027,” he said.
Loke said the government should concentrate on delivering its reform commitments instead of focusing on the next election.
On relations among component parties, he said there were no issues as all parties remained committed to the Unity Government.
“Political parties and politicians will naturally engage in politics. However, unless a party decides to withdraw its support for the current prime minister or government, the situation remains unchanged,” he said.
Loke said Parliament need not be dissolved as Anwar continued to enjoy majority support among Members of Parliament.
