PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has decided to maintain 12 teaching periods per week for Malay in national schools (SK), Chinese in national-type Chinese schools (SJKC) and Tamil in national-type Tamil schools (SJKT) under the implementation of the 2027 school curriculum (KP 2027).
The decision is intended to ensure that the allocation of teaching periods for the respective languages is not reduced.
In a statement on Thursday, the MOE said stakeholder engagement sessions had been held to discuss the allocation of language teaching periods under KP 2027.
“The MOE appreciates the views and suggestions put forward throughout the discussions.
“The ministry expresses its appreciation to all parties who contributed their views. Language proficiency and the learning needs of students across all school streams remain a priority in the country’s curriculum reform,” it said.
Earlier, it was reported that MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M Saravanan has urged the MOE to maintain the existing allocation of 12 teaching periods for the Tamil language per week in SJKT schools, following a proposal to reduce it to 10 periods under the 2027 school curriculum restructuring.
He said the matter was raised in a letter to Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek, which was also copied to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
