Kota Kinabalu: City Hall (DBKK) is determined to ensure no more single use plastic bags by August 2024, which is less than 10 months from now.
“This campaign was launched on Sept 11, 2023 and 33 major outlets in Kota Kinabalu have registered for the first phase of the campaign.
“There are four phases and will be completed by mid-2024,” said the DBKK Director of Solid Waste Management Leong Tze Fui in his presentation of the “Current Initiatives & Long-Term Mitigation Plans for Kota Kinabalu Sea and Rivers” at the Environmental Quality Act 1974 seminar, recently.
He said the waste composition percentage in rivers and beaches of the city comprised 38.5 per cent plastic waste, followed by 18.5 per cent organic waste matters, 16.6 per cent e-waste, 8 per cent diapers, 6 per cent textiles, 5 per cent rubber, 4 per cent polystyrene, 1 per cent paper, 1 per cent glass, and 1 per cent metal.
