Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Meteorological Department Director Amirzudi Hashim refuted claims circulating on social media about an imminent tropical cyclone threat to Malaysia.
“In the near future, no tropical cyclone is expected to hit our country,” he told Daily Express.
He clarified that Typhoon Yagi, the subject of recent social media speculation, had already dissipated on Sept 8, 2024.
“The current forecast track being observed is for Tropical Storm Bebinca, not Typhoon Yagi,” he said.

He said these comments were likely broad assessments of the country’s geographical vulnerability rather than predictions of an imminent threat.
He urged the public to rely on official sources for weather-related information and forecasts.
The Meteorological Department continues to monitor weather patterns closely and will provide updates if any significant changes occur that could affect Malaysia’s weather conditions.
