North Korea denounces the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a serious sovereignty encroachment and a brutal act of hegemony.

SEOUL: North Korea has denounced the United States’ capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a “serious encroachment of sovereignty”.

A foreign ministry spokesperson made the statement in a report carried by the official KCNA news agency on Sunday.

“The incident is another example that clearly confirms once again the rogue and brutal nature of the US,” the spokesperson said.

Pyongyang’s foreign ministry “strongly denounces the US hegemony-seeking act committed in Venezuela”.

It described Maduro’s removal as a “wanton violation of the UN Charter and international laws”.

The statement called for international voices of protest against the US.

North Korea has long justified its nuclear and missile programmes as a deterrent against alleged US regime change efforts.

The US operation represents a nightmare scenario for Pyongyang’s leadership.

Maduro and his wife were seized by US special forces during a pre-dawn attack on Saturday.

They were subsequently flown to New York City to face drug-trafficking and weapons charges.

Pyongyang was a vocal backer of Maduro’s socialist regime in Caracas.
