Ahmad Zahid urges the public to stay vigilant as the 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon begins, with heavy rain, floods and rough seas possible until March 2027.
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the public to stay vigilant and prioritise safety as the 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon is expected to begin today.
He said the monsoon, expected to persist until March 2027, could bring prolonged heavy rainfall, flooding and rough seas, threatening residents’ safety, particularly in vulnerable areas.
He said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasts indicated that three to five episodes of prolonged heavy rainfall could occur between November 2026 and January 2027.
“This could increase the risk of flooding, particularly in areas near rivers and low-lying areas,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Ahmad Zahid said strong winds during the period could also cause rough seas and rising sea levels in the South China Sea.
He advised the public to monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings, avoid flood-prone areas and never attempt to cross floodwaters, while complying with the authorities’ instructions, including evacuation orders when necessary.
Ahmad Zahid also highlighted the importance of being prepared by having important documents, medication, essential supplies and contact numbers ready for emergencies.
“Safety for yourself and your family must come first,” he said, hoping Malaysians would be kept safe from any calamities during the monsoon period.
