Wildfires erupted across northern California Tuesday (2 July), forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

The Thompson fire broke out before noon about 70 miles north of Sacramento, California’s state capitol, prompting firefighters to act promptly to combat the flames.

Firefighters lined roads and tried to keep the fire from reaching homes and helicopters dropped water from the sky.

Governor Newsom’s office announced Tuesday that federal funding had been approved to help with firefighting efforts.

High temperature over 100 degrees are expected through Wednesday.
