Former Ketereh Member of Parliament Tan Sri Annuar Musa has disclosed that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had repeatedly conveyed his readiness to relinquish the chairmanship of Perikatan Nasional (PN), well before recent political developments in Perlis unfolded. According to Annuar, the matter was raised consistently during a private meeting in London, where Muhyiddin made his intentions clear on multiple occasions.

Annuar, who sits on the PAS Central Committee, said the discussion took place in London after he attended an event organised by the United Kingdom PAS Club in Nottingham. Upon learning that Muhyiddin was also in the city, Annuar arranged to meet him for a personal discussion. During that meeting, Muhyiddin reportedly emphasised his openness to stepping down if PAS wished to assume leadership of the opposition coalition.

Annuar explained that Muhyiddin repeated his stance no fewer than five times, stressing that the transition could even take effect on January 1, 2026. He added that Muhyiddin had authorised him to relay this position to PAS leaders, although Annuar chose to follow party discipline by allowing internal processes to take their course rather than acting as an intermediary.

This clarification comes amid speculation linking Muhyiddin’s resignation to the political upheaval in Perlis, where the state’s Menteri Besar was replaced following the withdrawal of support by several assembly members. Annuar rejected suggestions that the Perlis episode had triggered Muhyiddin’s decision, maintaining that the former prime minister had been contemplating the move for some time.

The Perlis situation escalated after affidavits were reportedly signed by eight assembly members, leading to the resignation of PAS leader Mohd Shukri Ramli and the subsequent appointment of Bersatu’s Abu Bakar Hamzah as Menteri Besar. Shortly after, Muhyiddin formally announced that he would step down as PN chairman effective January 1, 2026.

Annuar described Muhyiddin’s willingness to voluntarily vacate the post as a responsible and statesmanlike gesture aimed at ensuring stability within the coalition. He noted that PN, which was initiated by Muhyiddin and now comprises five member parties along with several allied groups, requires calm deliberation rather than emotionally driven decisions.

He further confirmed that PAS has expressed its readiness to take on a leadership role within PN, should the coalition agree. Annuar urged all parties involved to remain composed, maintain open communication, and avoid speculation as PN prepares for a leadership transition to be decided by its supreme council in accordance with the coalition’s constitution.
