Not all legal disputes need go to court

TAWAU: Sabah DAP Committee Member Philip Yap said not every legal dispute needs to be taken to court, as some matters can be resolved through other means.

Yap said this was among the concerns raised by members of the public who attended earlier Free Legal Advisory Service sessions organised by Tawau DAP.

“We found that many who came still had questions about how their legal problems could be resolved and whether the matter needed to be brought to court,” he said.

“Some also wanted to know if a dispute could be settled through negotiation or private arrangement and whether other options existed,” he added.

He said many attendees found answers after receiving advice showing that there were, in fact, other avenues available to resolve their problems.

“Not all legal problems need to go to court; some can be settled through other methods without incurring unnecessary legal costs,” he said.

Yap said the service was organised to help the public understand their legal situation and the options available before deciding on their next step.

He invited members of the public with legal questions to attend the next Free Legal Advisory Service session on Sept 4.

The session will be held from 10am to noon at the Tawau DAP headquarters, located above Klinik Dr Lilian Hong, Taman Emas.

Lawyer Larina Wong will attend the session as legal adviser.

Yap said he hoped the free service would help the public understand the legal options available to them before making a decision, in line with the approach: “ask first, understand first, then decide on the next step”.

Those wishing to make a booking can contact him at 012-8013652, Ee Hang at 012-8012238, or the office at 013-2022826.

One thing to check factually: If this is for publication, verify whether the official title is “Sabah DAP Committee Member”, “Sabah DAP committee member”, or another formal designation, and whether the organisation officially uses “Free Legal Advisory Service” as its programme name.
