A 45-year-old woman from Michigan, United States, unexpectedly struck it rich after using ChatGPT to pick her lottery numbers, winning more than RM422,000 in the Powerball draw held on 6 September.
The woman, identified as Tammy Carvey from Wyandotte, had reportedly asked the AI chatbot to generate a set of Powerball numbers for her ticket — a decision that turned out to be life-changing. Her ticket matched four white balls and the Powerball, securing her a USD100,000 (approximately RM422,350) prize.
Tammy initially believed she had only won USD50,000, which is the standard payout before the Power Play multiplier is applied. However, upon checking her Michigan Lottery account, she discovered that the Power Play option she had selected had doubled her prize to USD100,000.
According to local reports, Tammy shared that she typically only participates in the Powerball when the jackpot grows exceptionally large — and this time, it had surpassed USD1 billion, prompting her to take a chance. She later recalled that she couldn’t believe her luck when she realised the numbers generated by ChatGPT had hit.
Her immediate plans for the winnings are both practical and grounded. Tammy stated that she intends to use part of the money to pay off her home and save the remainder for the future. She described the experience as surreal, especially given that she never expected a casual AI-generated suggestion to lead to such a significant payout.
Officials from the Michigan Lottery confirmed the win and used the opportunity to remind the public that lottery results are completely random and cannot be predicted or influenced by artificial intelligence, algorithms, or any other number-generating tools. The win, they emphasised, was purely a matter of chance.

While AI-driven number selection has sparked curiosity among lottery players worldwide, experts continue to stress that luck, not technology, determines the outcome.
