A police operation to arrest a murder accused in Nuh’s Beri village turned into a dramatic hostage situation when a mob allegedly attacked a CIA team, freed the suspect from custody and held a policeman captive inside a house before additional police forces rescued him.
The incident occurred on June 18 after CIA Nuh personnel received information that Javed, a wanted accused in a murder case registered at Punhana Sadar police station, was hiding at a relative’s house in Beri village. Acting on the tip-off, EHC Bharatpal reached the location and kept surveillance on the house.
According to the complaint, Bharatpal spotted Javed and successfully apprehended him. However, soon after the arrest, around 15 to 20 men and women allegedly surrounded the policeman and assaulted him despite being informed that he was a member of the CIA Nuh team performing official duty.
The police alleged that the group forcibly rescued Javed from custody and helped him escape. The situation escalated further when some of the accused allegedly forced the policeman into a car and took him to another house in the village, where he was confined in a room.
Before being completely cut off, the policeman managed to alert senior officers through his mobile phone. A police team from Mohammadpur Ahir police station rushed to the village and rescued him. During the operation, one accused, identified as Umair, son of Jamshed, a resident of Beri village, was arrested while the remaining suspects fled.
Tauru DSP Abhimanyu Lohan said a case had been registered against several named men and women under various sections related to obstructing a public servant in discharge of duty, harbouring a wanted criminal, rescuing an accused from police custody, assault and wrongful confinement.
Police teams are conducting raids to arrest the remaining accused and trace the escaped murder suspect. The incident has once again underscored the risks faced by police personnel during operations in the Mewat region, where law enforcement teams have on several occasions encountered resistance while attempting to apprehend wanted criminals.
