A 41-year-old nurse from Pahang fell victim to a phone scam, losing RM88,700 after being deceived by an individual posing as an officer from the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC).

Acting Pahang police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin reported that the victim received a call in mid-June from a suspect who claimed her bank account was under police investigation due to its alleged use by criminal syndicates. The call was subsequently transferred to another individual who pretended to be a police officer. This impostor informed her that she was implicated in the money laundering activities and pressured her to transfer her funds to specific bank accounts to resolve the matter.

In a state of fear and confusion, the nurse used her savings to make 12 cash transactions, amounting to RM88,700, into three different bank accounts provided by the scammers. Realizing that she had been scammed, she filed a police report in Temerloh.

Datuk Noor Hisam emphasized the importance of vigilance, advising the public to verify any suspicious calls with the police or relevant government agencies to avoid falling prey to similar scams. He urged people to use the official website https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my in order to check the legitimacy of accounts and telephone numbers before proceeding with any transactions.

This incident underscores the growing sophistication of phone scams and the necessity for the public to be cautious. Scammers often use fear and urgency to manipulate victims into making hasty decisions. By staying informed and verifying suspicious communications, individuals can protect themselves from financial fraud.

The Pahang police continue to investigate the case, hoping to track down the perpetrators and prevent further incidents. Meanwhile, they encourage anyone who receives dubious calls to report them immediately, helping to safeguard the community from such deceitful schemes.
