Nurul Izzah as PM’s senior adviser sends wrong message: Muda

KUALA LUMPUR – Nurul Izzah Anwar’s appointment as senior adviser to the prime minister – despite being on a pro-bono basis – still sends the wrong message to the public, Muda said.

The youth-based political party and ally of Pakatan Harapan (PH) said such “nepotism” should be stopped now or might become the root of greater problems.

“Muda as a partner in the unity government hopes that such appointments from among family members that have been made or will be made in the future, will be stopped,” the party’s secretary-general Amir Hadi said in a statement.

“This government that was formed on the basis of reforms must not only eradicate poverty or spur the economy, but also ensure good governance in its administration.

“Muda rejects the practices of previous governments, including the appointment of family members to strategic positions,” Amir said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Opinion has been divided ever since Nurul Izzah’s appointment as senior economic and finance adviser to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is the prime minister and also her father.

Anwar and other PH figures have defended the appointment, saying it did not amount to nepotism as Nurul Izzah would not be drawing a salary for the role.

Others, however, have questioned the necessity of appointing a family member, regardless of her qualifications, and whether there was no one else capable of the role. – The Vibes, February 4, 2023
