PARTI Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has pledged to continue her advocacy for political and social reform through broader civil society channels rather than directly within the party structure.
Addressing delegates at the opening of the 2026 PKR Women and Angkatan Muda Keadilan national congress at the Melaka International Trade and Exhibition Centre today, Nurul Izzah acknowledged the varied reactions to her recent political decisions.
"I choose to continue fighting, not directly within the party, but through the MADANI society pathway. For some people, it is unacceptable that I lost in 2022. For some, it is unacceptable that I won in 2025, while for others, they simply cannot accept that I will leave in 2026," she said.
She noted that public figures must remain guided by core principles rather than universal approval.
"You cannot satisfy everyone, but you can remain true to yourself," she said.
Her statements follow reports of her intention to step down from the position of deputy president. The party’s Central Leadership Council subsequently rejected her resignation, with PKR information chief Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil stating that she had been granted leave to focus on personal matters and her doctoral studies.
The opening ceremony was also attended by PKR Women chief Fadhlina Sidek and AMK chief Muhammad Kamil Munim.
Warning Against Compromising Principles
Nurul Izzah called on party leaders to maintain the foundational values of the reformasi movement when exercising governmental authority, warning members against adopting the practices of former political adversaries.
"Although we have weaknesses, we must do our utmost to avoid becoming what we hate most about our opponents. We must always remain vigilant," she said.
"When we have power, ask ourselves: am I doing all this for myself or for the country?" she added.
The remarks were delivered as PKR conducts its national congress to deliberate on party leadership, strategic direction, and its ongoing role within the governing coalition. - August 14, 2026
