  • Two sailors were killed and 19 others were injured, some critically.
  • The ship experienced a mechanical failure, according to the city’s mayor Eric Adams, causing it to lose power and collide with the bridge.
  • The Cuauhtémoc's masts, which were taller than the bridge's clearance, snapped upon impact. The 142-year-old bridge was spared major damage.
  • The ship, which first sailed in 1982, had been scheduled to depart on a goodwill tour to Iceland. Investigations into what happened are now ongoing.
