NYK marks milestone with launch of Tokyo Bay cruise ship Amane

JAPANESE shipping company NYK Line took a significant step toward transforming Tokyo Bay’s maritime hospitality on Sept. 11, holding the official naming and launch ceremony for its upcoming luxury restaurant ship, Amane, at Maehata Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in Nagasaki Prefecture.

During the formal ceremony, NYK Senior Managing Executive Officer Takuji Banno officially bestowed the name Amane upon the vessel. The name was selected to convey a serene voyage harmonized with the soothing sounds of the ocean, while symbolizing NYK’s intent for the project’s vision to resonate widely with the public.

The launch milestone was commemorated with a traditional ceremonial rope-cutting performed by Masamichi Katayama, founder and principal of renowned design firm Wonderwall, who serves as the vessel’s total designer. The event gathered key project stakeholders, including Shimpei Terada, president of Tysons & Company, the firm responsible for designing the vessel’s onboard guest experience.

Measuring approximately 48 meters in length with a gross tonnage of around 480 tons, Amane is designed to act as the modern successor to Lady Crystal, NYK’s current restaurant vessel operating in Tokyo Bay. Operating out of the vibrant Tennozu Isle waterfront district, the vessel will offer high-end culinary cruises while integrating advanced environmental tech, including an onboard hydrogen fuel cell system.

With the hull successfully launched, Maehata Shipbuilding will now proceed with interior outfitting and finalized systems installation. Amane is slated for official delivery in March 2027, ahead of its anticipated commercial service entry in May 2027.
