The controversy surrounding the choice of carols for a Christmas event in Sarawak has sparked criticism towards the organisers, backed by the Premier's Department, who refused to allow the carol "O Holy Night" to be sung in place of "Jingle Bell Rock." This decision has drawn the ire of the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS), which argued that "Jingle Bell Rock" is not related to the religious significance of Christmas, which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ.

TVS, the state-owned television station responsible for organizing the event, justified its refusal by citing the presence of religious elements in "O Holy Night." According to TVS, this decision aligned with the protocols of the Film Censorship Board (LPF) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). In response to TVS's decision, ACS announced its withdrawal from the "A Christmas Carol, Sarawak in Diversity" event scheduled for December 3.

This event is expected to be attended by Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg. Voon Lee Shan, the president of Parti Bumi Kenyalang, condemned the actions of the organizers, viewing it as a grave insult to the over one million Christians represented by the ACS. Voon argued that if TVS believes that "O Holy Night" contains religious elements, then there would have been no rationale for inviting ACS, since ACS is a religious body.

He further asserted that the organizers failed to recognize the constitutional freedom of worship for all religions in the country, despite Islam being the official religion. Supporting ACS's decision to reject the invitation, Voon stated that participating in the event would establish an unfavourable precedent and characterized the refusal to change the song as discriminatory against Christians.

He called upon Christians in Sarawak to stand firmly behind ACS and boycott the program. The controversy highlights the delicate balancing act required in multicultural and multi-religious societies. It underscores the importance of respecting religious diversity and the rights of religious communities to express their beliefs and practices.

While TVS may have taken its stance in compliance with governing bodies, the decision has invoked dissatisfaction and raised concerns about potential discrimination against Christians. Moving forward, it is crucial for all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and find a solution that upholds religious harmony and respects the constitutional rights of all religious groups.
