Oasis have announced their long-awaited reunion tour, 15 years after the infamous backstage bust-up between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher.

The Manchester-formed group, one of the defining rock bands of the Nineties, split in 2009 after a fiery row in Paris and have not played together since.

In a highly anticipated message, the band announced a run of 14 shows in the UK and Ireland next summer.

“The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised,” the band said.

The dates in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin will be Oasis’s “only shows in Europe next year”, it’s been confirmed. Find details on how to get tickets here.

There have been a number of hints in recent months, not least a surprise interview last week where Noel offered some rare praise of his younger brother. Both he and Liam have enjoyed successful solo careers since their split – Liam as a singer-songwriter and Noel with his band the High Flying Birds.

Manchester promises ‘good party right across the city’ to celebrate Oasis reunion

23:03

Maira Butt

Bev Craig, leader of Manchester City Council, who represents the Burnage ward, where the brothers grew up, said the news of the band’s reunion was “massive”.

She told the PA news agency: “I think Oasis is one of Manchester’s most iconic bands in the modern age, and obviously we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to make sure that this could come off, and that they’d be able to play in Manchester in a fantastic homecoming gig.

“And I think it’s just really, really great. It’s great for the city, the city’s changed a lot since Oasis were last together, hopefully significantly for the better on the world stage, but we’ll still be really happy to be host to the two Burnage boys as they reunite and come together in (council-run) Heaton Park.”

She added: “I think the whole city will be excited next summer, and I think we’ll no doubt see lots of events and activities that will sit alongside this and really, I think, celebrate it for the moment that it is.

“So I think we’ll make sure that we put on a good party right across the city for people to enjoy.”

Fans concerned about Oasis ticket prices and whether reconciliation will last

22:32

Maira Butt

Glaswegian David Walker, a leading member of the Oasis Collectors Group, told the PA news agency that he also remains worried about if Liam and Noel Gallagher will make it through their tour without another bust-up.

He said: “You wonder if they’ll make it through the tour, how are they going to rehearse? There’s been so many little infractions with them, you wonder, like, is the old stuff going to come up again?

“But no, ultimately, right now, very positive and yeah, it’s what the people want. It’s what, arguably, Britain might want right now, because, everyone’s fairly depressed and don’t have a lot of money.

As long as the tickets are, you know, reasonably priced, I suppose, which they probably won’t be, because there’ll be so much demand, there’s talk of like, 10 nights at London, which that might only be the tip of the iceberg. There might even be more than that.”

Noel and Liam Gallagher: Inside Britain’s most infamous sibling rivalry – and what led them to reunite

21:29

Kevin Perry

Oh, brother. From Cain and Abel to Prince Harry and Prince William, the annals of history are filled with fraternal rivalries. But has there ever been a sibling spat quite as bitter – and as public – as that between Noel and Liam Gallagher?

This week, the sibling frontmen of the hit Mancunian rock group Oasis announced that they were reforming the band for a much-hyped UK stadium tour, after 15 years of estrangement.

When the “Wonderwall” hitmakers disbanded in 2009, Noel and Liam’s once-brotherly relationship became arid and inhospitable: no Oasis, just desert.

In the years since, fans have consistently speculated about a reunion, though the Gallaghers’ frosty relationship has long made the prospect unlikely.

Now, it seems as though the famously loggerheaded duo have patched things up – at least enough to share a stage once again.

Oliver Browning reports:

Oasis have announced a shock reunion tour, 15 years after the infamous bust-up between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher.

The Manchester-born band, who released their chart-topping album Definitely Maybe around three decades ago, confirmed a series of dates that will kick off at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in July 2025.

In resurfaced footage from their penultimate show one month earlier, Liam appears visibly upset as Oasis perform at iTunes Festival in London.

According to reports from the time, Liam was involved in a fracas with an audience member throughout the gig after an object was apparently thrown.

Oasis are reforming and the signs are everywhere that it’s a return to 1997 all over again

19:40

Maira Butt

Post-pandemic, current-cost of living crisis, people are angrier and more bitter, and that feels intensified by social media, which expresses and fosters hate much better than it does laughter. By 1997, money had started to come back into the economy, and the ubiquitous spite of social media hadn’t poisoned the national mindset; where 2023 has furious memes, the 1990s had a Viz cartoon about a corrupt Tory called Baxter Basics.

Comment: Oasis are a band like no other – the reunion hype is fully justified

19:07

Maira Butt

Roisin O’Connor reports:

Naysayers might ask why a band reunion is generating so much hype when plenty of their Britpop peers have done the same in recent years. Blur returned to Wembley in July 2023, the same month that Pulp sold out Finsbury Park as part of their massive UK tour.

But no other rock band of their time really compares when it comes to that narrative arc: the humble origins, the difficult childhoods then the rise to global fame. The partying, the excess. Then the Romulus and Remus-level fallout of 2009, when Liam squared off with his brother in a backstage room at Rock en Seine festival in Paris, wielding Noel’s guitar “like an axe”. And now, the reconciliation.

Fans who attended last ever Oasis gig say they have waited their ‘whole life’ for reunion

17:55

Maira Butt

Oasis last performed together at V Festival in Staffordshire on 22 August 2009. They were due to appear the next day in Chelmsford, but left fans “gutted” after they didn’t take to the stage.

Chris Berrow, 34, told PA that getting to see Oasis in person after over a decade of waiting will “massively be unfinished business” for him.

“In the time in between, I became a professional guitar teacher, so I’m teaching kids how to play Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger, Champagne Supernova and I haven’t actually seen them together ever,” he said.

“I’m not somebody to cry very readily, but I think that could happen as I would be able to complete something I’ve been meaning to for what feels like my whole life.”

Oasis tour could be ‘once in a generation moment’ says top UK music executive

17:20

Maira Butt

UK Music chief executive Tom Kiehl has said that the band’s tour could have “a lot of impact on local economies” due to the only European dates taking place across the UK and Ireland.

Mr Kiehl told PA: “Obviously, when rumours were mentioned a few years ago, it looked very unlikely that this would ever come to pass. So it could be a really once in a generation moment.”

He added, “Having a big music event in your community has a knock on and spill over impact on the wider economy too, so great news for the UK.”

Oasis reunion will provide ‘supersonic’ boost to UK economy, say experts

16:15

Maira Butt

The Oasis reunion tour is expected to provide a boost to the UK economy, as fans flock to see the band reform.

Thomas Pugh, an economist for RSM UK, said the concerts would “undoubtedly be a phenomenal sellout, which will also cause a spike in demand for accommodation and hospitality in those cities lucky enough to be hosting a gig,”

Pugh told PA: “This potentially presents a very profitable opportunity for the hospitality industry, especially hoteliers.

For example, Taylor Swift and the Foo Fighters saw hotel prices in Cardiff, which will also host an Oasis gig, rise by up to 500%.”

Muniya Barua, deputy chief executive at trade group BusinessLDN said the tour could provide a “supersonic boost” in the capital.

Richard Benson writes:

People in the UK – not just London – had already felt something interesting was happening in the culture, you could tell that from the way newspapers and TV bulletins had begun covering fashion, house clubs and indie music. But up to that point, it had all been very instinctive and hedonistic. Once you knew serious-minded people overseas were studying it all, you wondered if it might, in the words of Jarvis Cocker, not just be 20,000 people standing in a field, but also about what The Future was meant to feel.

Oasis appear to address Glastonbury rumours in reunion announcement

11:41

Jacob Stolworthy

Oasis has appeared to address Glastonbury rumours while announcing the band will embark on a reunion tour, 15 years after splitting up.

Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher have buried the hatchet after an infamous backstage bust-up ahead of a 2009 festival date in Paris. Over the last 15 years, the pair have repeatedly fielded – and fuelled – reports of a reunion, and will now perform together for a run of 14 shows in the UK and Ireland next summer.

Music lovers are now speculating Oasis will headline Glastonbury due to the fact their confirmed tour dates arrive just after Glastonbury is due to take place, from 25 to 29 June 2025.

However, as “Glastonbury” became the top trend on social media in the UK in the wake of the band’s official announcement, Oasis’s post was updated to include the sentence: “These dates will be the bands exclusive European appearances”

This appears to shut down suggestion that Oasis will kick off their reunion tour with a Glastonbury headline slot.

Sources close to the band have told me that a reunion has been in the works for some time, and Liam has, despite his habit of poking the bear, never hidden his willingness to get the gang back together. In 2017, he was more than happy to praise Noel (“a good songwriter”) and said he missed being in a band with his brother. Particularly as he wasn’t a huge fan of giving interviews.

“That was the good balance of Oasis,” he told me. “But now I’ve got to do a bit of that kind of thing and I’ll probably have to get media trained.”
