A recently released music video by Malaysian singer 44 Airel has drawn sharp criticism, particularly from Islamic preacher PU Syed Mohd Bakri Syed Ishak, who described the visuals as inappropriate and bordering on obscenity. The video, produced for Airel’s new single “Sempurna,” aimed to address contemporary social issues but ended up igniting debate over its content.

Released on June 13, the video features several provocative scenes including depictions of illegal street racing, nightclub visits, brawls, and a controversial bedroom sequence. The most talked-about moment involves Airel lying in bed with a woman, shown seductively interacting with him and leading to an implied kiss off-screen. This particular scene has sparked outrage among conservative viewers.

PU Syed expressed strong disapproval in a public statement on June 17, labeling the production as senseless and nearly pornographic. He argued that such depictions go beyond acceptable limits and are especially harmful when made easily accessible to youth via social media platforms. Emphasizing that highlighting societal issues does not require suggestive visuals, he called the effort a misguided attempt to attract attention.

The preacher went further by urging regulatory bodies to screen and filter music videos before they are published online. According to him, allowing explicit elements to be showcased under the guise of art or social commentary can mislead the public and erode moral values. He also recommended that legal or religious actions be considered to address such content, especially when produced by Muslim artists.

Addressing the backlash, Airel responded by clarifying that the scenes depicted were entirely fictional and part of a broader artistic narrative meant to reflect real-world challenges. He acknowledged the mixed reactions to the video and stated that he welcomed all feedback, both positive and critical. The singer maintained that the intention was not to provoke but to spark awareness.

Despite the controversy, the video has garnered over 65,000 views and continues to draw attention online. Whether the uproar will lead to official censorship or policy changes remains to be seen, but the incident has reignited discussions on balancing creative expression with cultural and religious sensitivities in Malaysia’s entertainment scene.
