It was a snapshot tailor-made for viral headlines: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and former ally-turned-rival Azmin Ali sharing what appeared to be a brief, affectionate embrace at the funeral of the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

A cheek kiss was involved. Social media lit up. Commentators scrambled to find meaning. Was this a thaw? A political pivot? Or just a well-timed gesture during a solemn occasion? https://newswav.com/A2504_nyhs3B?s=A_r5BE6U3&language=eh

In Malaysian politics, where alliances are fluid and memories astonishingly short, such moments are rarely just what they seem.

One day’s foe can become the next day’s “strategic partner in unity,” and even the deepest of rifts can be airbrushed under the soft-focus lens of national reconciliation.

Still, the optics were striking. For two men whose political fallout once sent shockwaves through their party—and arguably altered the national political trajectory—to now be exchanging cheek kisses suggests either a monumental shift… or a masterclass in political theatre.

Let’s not overreach. This was no grand reconciliation. It was a gesture, rich in symbolism, but light on substance. A moment of civility, perhaps even humanity, shared between two public figures at a time of mourning. But in politics, even civility has strategic utility.

Anwar understands the power of public gestures. Azmin, long a student of political timing, knows when to lean in. Whether this fleeting interaction signals anything more than a headline-friendly distraction remains to be seen.

In the meantime, we’re reminded once again that in Malaysian politics, today’s “betrayal” is often just tomorrow’s footnote. And sometimes, a hug is just a hug—or the opening act in another chapter of reinvention.

Either way, the nation watched, speculated, and moved on.

Roti canai prices remain unchanged, the machinery of governance continues its grind, and the show, as always, goes on.
