An off-duty nurse has been praised by Malaysians after stepping in during an unexpected emergency shortly after finishing her night shift.

According to Pantai Hospital Ipoh, the incident occurred on 4 May when a woman dining at a coffee shop within the hospital premises suddenly began choking and struggling to breathe.

Off-duty nurse steps in to save choking woman at Ipoh hospital

Coincidentally, off-duty nurse Siti Maisyura, who was dressed casually at the time, was at the cafe waiting for her son’s follow-up appointment. As panic spread through the premises, Maisyura immediately stepped in to assist by performing the Heimlich manoeuvre.

The hospital shared the following tribute to her actions:

“Officially off duty, she could have simply remained seated like everyone else. As frightened family members cried out for help, every second became critical.

“Without hesitation, Maisyura rushed forward. Relying on her training, courage, and instinct to save lives, she calmly performed the Heimlich manoeuvre.”

Moments later, the obstruction was successfully dislodged, and the woman was able to breathe again.

“In that terrifying moment, Maisyura was more than a nurse; she was a lifeline,” the post continued.

 

Recognition of service

In conjunction with International Nurses Day, Maisyura later received a token of appreciation for her quick actions in assisting a member of the public in need.
