TAWAU: A police officer has been detained to assist investigations into a stray shot that injured his colleague during an arrest operation here recently.

Acting district police chief Supt Champin Piuh said investigations are focused on firearm handling procedures during a scuffle that occurred when officers attempted to detain a suspect who tried to flee.

He said the injured victim, a 39-year-old corporal, had undergone surgery at Tawau Hospital on Sunday and is receiving follow-up treatment at the Orthopaedic Ward.

The case is being investigated under Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960, while the foreign male suspect in his 30s is also being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code, Section 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963, Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 15(1) of the same Act.

In the 10.45am incident on Jalan Persisiran Pantai, two patrol officers reportedly pursued the suspect to the Bazhong Commercial Centre before arresting him, during which a shot was suspected to have been discharged, injuring the suspect’s left hand and the right thigh of another assisting officer.
