Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old offshore worker was jailed three years and ordered to be caned once Friday for physically sexually assaulting his 11-year-old stepdaughter.
Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim convicted him after finding that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt over the offence at an apartment in Penampang in January 2022.
The offence under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 is punishable by up to 20 years’ jail and whipping.
The court stayed the sentence pending his High Court appeal and set bail at RM10,000 with two local sureties, but warned that bail would be revoked if he failed to file his notice of appeal by Monday.
He was also ordered to undergo rehabilitation counselling while in prison and be placed under police supervision for three years after his release.
