The Delhi Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, will launch a new initiative to collect and recycle discarded clothes through special collection boxes to be installed at 10 Delhi Metro stations across the Capital. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the initiative aims to promote environmental conservation and sustainable development by scientifically recycling textile waste into useful products such as bags, rugs, yarn, fibre and non-woven felt.
The identified Metro stations include Shahdara, Mohan Estate, Rohini West, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Hauz Khas, Punjabi Bagh West, Dwarka and Shalimar Bagh.
The project will be implemented by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in collaboration with non-governmental organisations and self-help groups, which will segregate and upcycle collected garments for reuse. According to officials, the collection areas will be branded under the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation. Formalities related to installation, branding and signing of a memorandum of understanding are currently underway.
