Ombudsman says also fighting for accountability, will follow evidence

MANILA, Philippines — The Office of the Ombudsman on Tuesday said it was also fighting for accountability and transparency and that it would follow the evidence, amid the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) rally supporting Sen. Rodante Marcoleta.

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said on Monday that his office was about to file a plunder case against the senator. This was in connection with three amounts totaling P75 million that investigators said Marcoleta had accepted.

"The placards we saw there, their battlecry now is accountability and transparency. ...If they are fighting for accountability and transparency, that is also what we in the Office of the Ombudsman are fighting for, that all who err will be held accountable by law", Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano said in Filipino and English on Tuesday.

Clavano noted that in the Monday briefing, Remulla had mentioned not only the matter pertaining to Marcoleta but also others pertaining to other people.

"I think it will show through our actions that we are not selective here. Evidence is there and we will always follow the evidence no matter what", Clavano said.

Marcoleta had said in a post on Facebook that the complaint was "without evidence of public injury, official favor, corrupt consideration, or abuse of office".
