EIGHTEEN people have been rescued and one confirmed dead after a vessel carrying anglers nearly capsized in waters northeast of Pulau Perak, off Yan, in Kedah on Wednesday.

Director of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for Kedah and Perlis, First Admiral (Maritime) Romli Mustafa, said the survivors were located and retrieved by the Royal Malaysian Navy’s KD Ledang before receiving initial treatment onboard.

He said the group was then transported to the Markas Wilayah Laut 3 (MAWILA 3) jetty at the Tanjung Lembung naval base for further assistance.

“As soon as KD Ledang arrived at the MAWILA 3 jetty at 6am, all survivors underwent health checks by the Ministry of Health. One deceased victim was handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for further action,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

Romli added that, following the medical assessments, the 18 survivors were placed under the care of the MMEA and the Marine Department for subsequent procedures.

“With this, the search-and-rescue operation has been fully terminated,” he said.

The operation was launched yesterday after the MMEA activated a search for the crew of a fishing charter that was feared to have capsized in waters northeast of Pulau Perak. - November 27, 2025
