One dead, one missing after boat sinks in Kota Belud

KOTA BELUD: One person died and another remains missing after a boat sank off Kampung Tamau Batu Gadung on Sunday.

The incident involved eight anglers, six of whom managed to swim to safety.

The victims were believed to have been swept away by strong currents after the boat overturned at a river mouth at about 5.20pm.

An 18-year-old victim was later found by members of the public at about 9.50pm, about 700 metres from the scene.

He was taken to Hospital Kota Belud by members of the public but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

A second victim, aged 23, remains missing as search and rescue (SAR) operations continue.

Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Elge Bakuk said nine personnel were deployed to the location with a fire engine and a four-wheel-drive utility vehicle.

He said search efforts are focused around the incident area and are being carried out by rescue teams.

“Search operations are ongoing and updates will be provided from time to time,” he said in a statement, Monday.
