One person was killed and four others injured after an unexploded ordnance went off in a remote area of Gulmarg in Baramulla district on Saturday.

Police identified the deceased as Zubair Ahmad Bajjad, a resident of Lateefabad Khudpora, Chandoosa, Baramulla.

Reports said a blast-like sound was heard around 3 pm near the Sumli Wali Dhok area, following which security forces rushed to the spot.

Police stated that information was received regarding an incident in the remote upper reaches of Baramulla, and preliminary findings suggest the explosion occurred when the deceased came into contact with an old explosive object lying in the area.

“Inquest proceedings have been initiated under relevant provisions of law. A forensic examination of the scene has been conducted, and specialist teams are sanitising the area to rule out the presence of any other unexploded explosive material,” the statement said.

Soon after the incident, rumours circulated claiming that Army personnel had been injured.

However, Baramulla Police dismissed the reports, calling them false and unsubstantiated, and clarified that no Army personnel were injured at Asha Post.

“The information being circulated is completely false, baseless and without factual basis. No Army personnel have sustained any injuries at Asha Post,” police said.

The police cautioned that spreading unverified information can create confusion and disturb public order, advising citizens to rely only on official sources for accurate updates.
