Clean-up efforts continued in Munich on Saturday after two freight trains collided on a railway bridge overnight, killing one person and sending two wagons crashing onto a road below.
One of the two wagons that was dangling from the bridge was lifted onto the road below by a heavy-duty crane around midday, police said. Plans called for the second wagon to be lifted back onto the bridge; however, a police spokeswoman noted that several derailed wagons would first need to be removed from the bridge deck.
The collision occurred at around 1:40 am (2340 GMT Friday) for reasons that remain unclear.
Police have not yet released further details about the victim.
Debris from the collision struck vehicles below. A city bus was hit by a falling object and suffered minor damage, police said. The driver was uninjured and there were no passengers on board.
Seven parked cars were also struck by debris and lightly damaged.
Clean-up operations began on Saturday morning and are expected to continue through Sunday.
Police said the wagons were not carrying any cargo and there was no danger to the public.
The accident occurred during shunting operations on a line used exclusively by freight trains, a spokeswoman for rail operator Deutsche Bahn said. Shunting operations typically involve rearranging rail cars. There are no disruptions to regional or long-distance passenger services.
