One of the more unusual cases I handled recently - our Client was a single Malaysian man who genuinely wanted to settle down, so he paid a "private, exclusive" Vietnamese mail order bride agency to help him find a wife.
The agency was very confident, guaranteed that they would find him a suitable partner. Contract even got full refund clause if they couldn’t make it happen.
They introduced a few ladies, tapi all tak ngam. Some matches looked like the agency just checked, “Biological female? Okay, compatible. Onz”
After a few disastrous dates and catfishes, eventually our client said, okay lah, this is clearly not working. Please refund according to contract (there was a moneyback guarantee in the terms of engagement).
But, suddenly the dating agency became shy. The same people who were supposed to help him get replies from women now stopped replying to him.
Delay here, excuse there, ding dong for months yet still no refund.
So he engaged us. We sent an LOD to kick things off. They were still coy and only offered to refund half of our Client's money. Granted, the debt was not much (less than RM10k); so in my estimation, they were betting that the debt was too small for our Client to actually do anything.
However, once we got the Writ sealed and the court papers arrived, suddenly the debtor became very, very responsive. Long story short, eventually our client got his full refund.
Still no wife, unfortunately. But at least no longer poorer after paying people who also couldn’t find him one. Of course, nobody can guarantee you true love; but if your client contract guarantees a money back guarantee in black and white, you'd better pay before a debt recovery boogeyman comes your way.
